The latest figures released by an Experian Footfall study indicates that shoppers are continuing to desert the high street. The worst hit regions were Wales and the South East where shopper numbers were down 7.13% while the North East, South East and East Midlands saw a rise. This is a recession trend that I have noticed all to clearly where my local city centre high street is worryingly starting to resemble a ghost town due to an increasing number of empty, disused shop fronts.

However, it was admitted that as figures from 2008 featured an early easter this may have skewed this years study data but it was added that Mothers day figures were also down by 1.7% on last year.

In contrast another recent study showed that there has been a 13% increase in online shopping sales in February. Maybe this is a sign that the UK shopper is starting to divert their attention away from the struggling high street in favour of online discount shopping where the convenience and choice of discount offers is abundant.

In the doom and gloom of the current UK recession, new figures released by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has offered some encouraging news for the retail sector. The BRC has has said that sales of retail goods rose in January after shops cut prices to encourage consumers to keep spending following a dismal pre-christmas season.

Figures show that there was a 1.1% increase compared to reatil sales last year. This has been the biggest increase since May 2008. However the BRC warned that the economic conditions still remained weak and the January Discount Shopping sales rise may only be a blip in these unstable times.

This is enforced by the news that the sports retailer JJB has applied to place two of its subsidiary companies into adminstration. The footwear stores Original Shoe Company and Qube have been suffering from poor sales and trading at a loss. However the companys will continue to trade as normal and JJB have said they had received several indications of interest for its fitness division.

As the UK recession and global credit crunch begins to tighten it grip, this week saw the announcement that the high street shoe shop chain Barrets and Priceless have gone into administration.

Overall these two chains have a network of 400 stores throughout the UK with a workforce of 5,450 employees.

Adminstrators have stated that the shops will continue to trade as usual and will not be closed as they are seeking to place Barrets and Priceless into a Company Voluntary Arrangement or CVA. This is where people who are owed money by the firm are able to vote on a repayment proposal which the directors of the company are to put forward.

If the proposal receives the approval of 75% of its creditors then it is possible that Barrets and Priceless can emerge from administration and pay its debts within an agreed time period.
